In an economy that has construction companies begging for workers of any calibre, Clark Builders' Calgary office is in the enviable position of having more good applicants than openings. What's the secret? "Good people attract good people," says Brad Regier, who heads that office. "I think it's the culture. That's really what sets us apart."

Since 1999, when Clark Builders extended its reach to Calgary by purchasing Carlson Contractors, Brad and colleagues have built a team whose escalating reputation is reflected in an expanding crop of red and black CB signs. The candidates who fit this culture are entrepreneurial and flexible, he says. "The more diversified they are, the more valuable they are for us." Once aboard, he adds, workers are not pigeonholed, but invited to develop diverse skills. "You spend a lot of time at work; it's important that you enjoy it. That doesn't mean that every day is going to be paradise; it's not. But we want people to enjoy their work, to enjoy the people they work with, to have opportunity to grow."
