Moving to Edmonton from out of province several years ago, Tim James thoroughly researched all his options before knocking on Clark Builders' door. For him, diversity of opportunity was a key selling point. Indeed, Clark Builders is unique in Alberta in tackling the full range of commercial, institutional, residential, light/heavy industrial and pre-engineered projects. But it's the culture that keeps him here. "Clark Builders does very diverse work, both in contract dollar amount and also in construction disciplines," he says. "But what really sets us apart is that we care about the person. The company's reputation is phenomenal, and I think a lot of that is due to really good relationships."

Initial worries about loss of freedom after a dozen years of self-employment quickly proved unfounded, he adds. "Nobody in the Clark Builders team tells anybody else what to do and when to do it. There certainly are extraneous schedules, but we encourage people to set their own goals and timetables."

It's amazing to be part of a company that doesn't micromanage. I love it.
