Integrated Process Transfer Facility

Edmonton, Alberta

Project Description

The City of Edmonton's Integrated Process and Transfer facility is a remarkable combination of size and efficiency.

Since launching its curbside recycling program in 1988, the City has been at the forefront of responsible waste management.

The project team has seamlessly integrated these principles to address a pressing need in the Edmonton region - the replacement and improvement of the aging Cloverbar landfill.

The newly constructed facility streamlined the flow of household and commercial waste through a three-phase process: a tipping floor, pre-process area, and refuse derived facility. With a building footprint spanning 190,000 square feet, the site boasts dedicated spaces for processing and transferring approximately 450,000 tons of waste and recyclable material annually.

The main building, constructed in collaboration with our metal buildings division, features an impressive clear span of over 215 feet. on the transfer floor - an area equivalent to two-thirds of a football field, extending 1 1/3 football fields in length.

In the pre-process area, two massive trommels take center stage, each weighing over 178,000 lbs. These incredible machines, delivered in one piece from Pennsylvania, begin the sorting process by rotating at a speed of nine rotations per minute. With their 12' diameter cylinders equipped with 2"" and 9"" holes, these trommels allow materials to fall through selectively. The subsequent manual sorting is carried out along 54 conveyors spanning the vast expanse of the main structure. Due to waste process requirements, extremely tight concrete tolerances were required and successfully met.
