Fort McKay Community Centre

Fort McKay, Alberta

Project Description

The Fort McKay Community Centre is a 12,000-square-foot, purpose-built facility that serves as a vital gathering space for festivals, youth and elder events, conferences, and community activities. It will also be a central location to bring people together to learn and share the rich cultural history of Fort McKay.

Clark Builders led construction and self-performed key scopes, including the installation of architectural cladding. The result is a highly adaptable, inclusive space that features:

  • A mass timber structure, featuring exposed glulam beams
  • A commercial-grade kitchen and concession
  • Main stage with backstage support and storage
  • Seating for up to 500, with bleachers for 300
  • 115 parking spaces, including accessible stalls
  • Sustainable wood construction to help lower the carbon impact

Developed in close collaboration and alignment with the vision of the Fort McKay First Nation, Fort McKay Métis Nation, and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo, the project prioritized Indigenous engagement, local labour, and continuous input to ensure the Centre reflects the community's values, cultural identity, and long-term needs.

This project reflects our long-standing relationship with the Fort McKay community. Since 2020, we’ve delivered six other facilities in the community and surrounding area, including the Fire Hall, Elsie Fabian School, Elders Residence, Land-Based Learning Centre, Youth Centre, and Arena Renovation.
