The City of Yellowknife envisioned a vibrant, year-round destination to enhance community wellness, recreation, and connection. In partnership with architectural firm Arcadis, Clark Builders brought this vision to life through the design and construction of the Yellowknife Aquatic Centre—an inclusive, state-of-the-art facility that blends fitness, fun, and cultural celebration in the heart of the Northwest Territories.
The facility features an 8-lane competition pool, a leisure pool with a lazy river, a therapy pool, an indoor spray park, a splash pad, and a waterslide. Supporting spaces include multipurpose rooms, universal changerooms, staff offices, and a second-floor viewing gallery and administration area.
Sustainability and cultural connection were foundational to the project. The centre is connected to Yellowknife’s biomass district heating system and includes a range of green building features such as LED lighting, variable frequency drive pool systems, regenerative filters, and UV water treatment. The building exceeds NECB 2017 performance standards by 15% and is targeting LEED certification.
Community engagement shaped both the design and experience of the space. Indigenous artwork was thoughtfully integrated into the tile design, bringing beauty, colour, and cultural meaning to the facility. In addition, murals created by local students—using materials provided by Clark Builders—were displayed along the construction fencing, celebrating youth creativity and local pride throughout the building process.
This project holds special significance for Clark Builders. With our roots in Yellowknife, we are especially proud to have helped deliver a facility that will serve the community for generations to come.
