The Grande Prairie Regional Hospital is a greenfield regional replacement hospital that serves immediate residents of Grande Prairie and provides support care for Northern Alberta, North Eastern BC and North Western Saskatchewan. The facility offers a wide range of acute care and outpatient care services, including in-patient units with 239 beds, eight operating rooms, and a range of essential departments, including the Emergency Department, Obstetrics, Intensive Care Unit, Diagnostics, Cancer Center, Mental Health, and outpatient ambulatory care. Additionally, it also features a cutting-edge health training center affiliated with the local Grande Prairie Regional College.
After taking over the project as replacement Construction Manager in 2018, the success of the project hinged on how the work was restarted. Our team spent the initial three months assessing site conditions, work in place, remaining work, procuring trade partners, building an efficient team, establishing work sequence and flow, and mobilizing to site.
As work began on site, we identified past deficient work and corrected it to ensure a quality product at turn-over. Maintaining transparent communication with the Owner and building trust and confidence played a crucial role in completing the project three months ahead of schedule.
The facility is unique in containing a large children’s hospital within a general hospital concept. This component contains a Level II NICU, a Pediatric IPU Wing, a Pediatric MH IPU Wing, and an Obstetrics department that includes two Operating Rooms and private Labour Birthing Recovery Post-Partum (LBRP) rooms.
The project achieved numerous accomplishments, including over a million hours of work with zero lost time incidents, saving close to a million dollars through our partnership with Turner‘s Procurement Group, utilizing SourceBlue for sourcing long-lead items that could have jeopardized the schedule, and extensive self-performed services.
