Horizon View

The Horizon housing project in the Glamorgan area of Calgary, Alberta, was commissioned by Horizon Housing Society. The 142,000 square feet of living space created by this project has created a lasting impact on the surrounding community by providing access to affordable housing options that support families and individuals living with a variety of mental health and mobility needs. 

For the Horizon housing project, Clark Builders constructed 149 condominium-style units and two, six-unit townhome blocks. Twenty-six of the units are accessible, enabling independent living for those with disabilities, and a five-person unit is available for the Universal Rehabilitation Service Agency (URSA) to facilitate those with mobility challenges that may require temporary rehabilitation or ongoing assistance with daily living activities. 

The buildings are wood-framed structures, and the condominium-style units are built above a one-storey concrete parking garage, which the team self-performed with cast-in-place concrete. To overcome the challenges of a congested site located next to a utility corridor, Last Planner® tools were implemented to phase the project schedule and procure material efficiently, and the team coordinated closely with Enmax to avoid incidents with utilities. The internal walls were also prefabricated off-site to allow for smoother installation on the crowded site.
