Makoyopisstooki Peacemaking Centre

Stand Off, Alberta

Project Description

In proud partnership with the Kainai Nation, Clark Builders delivered a new 20,000-square-foot contemporary court facility in Standoff, Alberta. The new facility provides a culturally informed space to support the Nation’s justice needs while honouring and incorporating Indigenous values, traditions, and approaches to community healing.

The design embraces the principles of restorative justice and reconciliation. Key design features include rammed-earth walls and a central peacemaking room anchored framed by a traditional teepee frame—symbolic elements that express connection, strength, and resilience.

The building’s steel-framed structure rests on a structural slab with piles and is enclosed with a combination of metal and translucent panel curtain walls to enhance durability and natural light. The scope also includes shell space for a future provincial courtroom with secure holding cells, ensuring flexibility for evolving community and justice needs.

This project builds on Clark Builders’ long-standing relationship with the Kainai Nation, following the successful completion of other community-focused initiatives. Together, these projects demonstrate our shared commitment to creating spaces that honour culture, foster inclusion, and serve future generations.
