Tulita Health and Social Services Centre

The Tulita Health & Social Services Centre will strengthen access to essential healthcare for the remote community of Tulita, located at the confluence of The Great Bear and Mackenzie Rivers in the Sahtu Region of Northwest Territories. Situated nearly 800 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife and accessible only by barge, ice road, or aircraft, the facility will serve as a vital hub for healthcare services, bringing medical treatment, trauma care, dental services, counselling, rehabilitation, and community support together under one roof.

The project began as a Design-Build partnership before being paused during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, Clark Builders was awarded the Construction Management contract to complete the project.

Designed to meet the unique needs of the North, the two-storey, 14,000-square-foot facility reflects a holistic approach to healthcare while embracing the region's Indigenous culture and identity. The facility includes patient reception and intake areas, trauma and treatment rooms, dental care, X-ray and rehabilitation rooms, a laboratory, an ambulance garage, and two residential suites for healthcare staff. The design also responds to the challenges of a changing northern climate, creating a resilient, welcoming environment that supports both patients and care providers while helping ensure continuity of care within this remote community.

Building in one of Canada's most remote regions presented unique logistical challenges, from seasonal transportation constraints to limited access to materials and labour. Drawing on decades of experience delivering projects across Northern Canada, Clark Builders worked collaboratively with the Government of the Northwest Territories, project partners, and the local community to develop innovative solutions that kept the project moving forward while respecting the region’s unique environment and culture.

Once complete, the Tulita Health & Social Services Centre will provide modern, culturally responsive healthcare infrastructure that improves access to essential services, supports healthier and more resilient communities, and serves the people of Tulita for generations to come.
