Edmonton Police Services - Southwest Division Station

Edmonton, Alberta

Project Description

The Edmonton Police Service Southwest Division Station is a sophisticated two-storey office building that boasts a range of impressive features. The building includes 11 secured holding cells with heavy steel doors, a raised access flooring system, and an exercise room with floating gym flooring, showers, and lsocker rooms that can accommodate over 300 personnel. To reduce noise from vibration, the gym floor was installed on hundreds of spring isolation pads. With a heavy focus on security, the building is equipped with more than 135 cameras and a central control room that monitors all other Edmonton Police Service stations.

The design of the building is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, featuring a 35-foot high clear storey atrium, walls that are protected with stainless steel corner guards, and a structural steel framing system that incorporates glulam timbers and tyndal stone. To ensure stability, the foundation is supported by over 500 driven steel piles and 450 truckloads of concrete.

The building exterior boasts extensive use of curtainwall and a front entrance glass canopy, as well as a sloped masonry finish on the south face. Inside, the building features a unique marble wall art installation that incorporated a heavy steel structure for installation in the lobby and a basement parking garage. Extensive site development was also completed, including fencing, external roads and parking, landscaping, and finishes. The facility welcomes the public through the exterior community plaza space that provides the ability to host functions in the Community Room, located off the front lobby.

The project achieved LEED® NC Silver certification, incorporating sustainable features such as a transpired solar heating collector wall, a high efficiency irrigation system that utilizes non-potable water harvested from rainwater, and the diversion of over 80% of construction waste away from landfill. Additionally, the building incorporates low VOC materials, abundant daylighting, and window views to more than 90% of the space.
